Public Webinar – History of Carver School

Monday, August 15th from 6pm to 7:30pm (CT), Immanuel Baptist Church will host a discussion of the 2019 history, Doing the Word: Southern Baptists’ Carver School of Church Social Work and Its Predecessors, 1907-1997 by T. Laine Scales and Melody Maxwell.

The webinar will begin with a brief introduction followed by a 45-minute public lecture by Drs. Maxwell and Scales. Dr. Wyatt (Pastor Stephanie) will offer a response/reflection of roughly 10–15 minutes. The remainder of the time will include a Q&A session with those in attendance.

Note From Pastor Stephanie:
This work not only provides a history of the groundbreaking Carver School and its antecedents, it analyzes the ways in which Southern Baptists perceived appropriate ministry roles for women and men over time and the educational curriculum developed at the seminary to support those roles. This study illuminates Southern Baptist practice in multiple areas: mission education, ministry creation and funding, church organization, denominational structure and priorities, denominational staffing, as well as theology and gender.

A copy of the work is available through the church library for those who would like to read it.

Those who would like to purchase a copy of the book may receive a discount from University of Tennessee Press with the code WORD22 through the end of August.

Please spread the word to those you know who may be interested. Questions? Contact Pastor Stephanie (swyatt@ibcnashville.org).
