Holy Week Scriptures from the Gospel of Mark
We begin with Palm Sunday when Jesus enters Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives. The crowd welcomed Jesus with palm leaves and cries of “Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mk 11:9). This week proceeds with Jesus overturning tables in the temple on Monday (Mk 11:15–19), teaching in the temple and in the streets of Jerusalem (Mk 11:20–13), and his anointing by an unnamed woman in the house of Simon the leper on Wednesday (Mk 14:3–9). On Maundy Thursday, we remember the last meal Jesus ate with his disciples, his betrayal, arrest, trial and beating on the authority of temple authorities, and Peter’s denial (Mk 14:10–72). On Good Friday, we remember that the Romans condemn him and crucify him (Mk 15). On Holy Saturday we sit in silence awaiting what comes next in anticipation.
